Canmore is a community with a labour force skilled and experienced in wood construction. More than just the building’s post-and-beam, glue-laminated structural frame is made from wood, most of the school’s interior partitions and exterior walls are also of wood frame construction. The Structural Insulated Panels (SIP’s) that form the various flat and mono-pitch roofs of the school are a composite or sandwich comprised of oriented strand board (OSB) and expanded polystyrene foam insulation manufactured in Calgary. The rough-sawn, stained cedar siding continues to fit well with the Town’s Design Guidelines as do the other cladding materials whose colors and textures resonate with the region’s natural and built heritage.
École Lawrence Grassi Middle School shows how a simple, rational and cost-effective construction system based on regionally harvested and manufactured materials, components, and assemblies, can harness local skills, enhance the local economy, and create durable and functional buildings of lasting beauty and enduring cultural significance. Lawrence Grassi, the miner, the mountaineer, the trail builder, and citizen of Canmore would likely not have wanted it any other way.
