Ron Thom and the Allied Arts explores the evolution of west coast architect Ron Thom from his beginnings as a student of Jack Shadbolt and B.C. Binning at the Vancouver School of Art, to his groundbreaking west coast house architecture, and on to his internationally renowned architecture at Massey College and Trent University in Ontario. Showcasing never-before-exhibited materials – including the original Massey College competition presentation boards and conceptual sketches, ceramics, vintage photographs, original furniture, prototypes and film projections – the exhibition juxtaposes Ron Thom's west coast work with his architecture in central Canada and Calgary, tracing the narrative thread of Thom's architectural evolution. Original archival material from the Canadian Architectural Archives at the University of Calgary will be included for the first time in the Nickle Galleries exhibition.

Future Voices: Situating Architecture Exhibition

15 exceptional young architecture firms from across Canada explore the future of architecture through their investigation and intervention in one of three sites in Calgary.  The designs have the capacity to anticipate new forms of architectural intervention and situate architecture as a key anticipator of change in the contemporary city.  The design work of this ideas forum is projected in a commissioned pavilion for Future Voices designed by Jason Johnson and Josh Taron, two young faculty members from the Architecture Program at the University of Calgary.

d.talks – Let’s talk about…community
Panel Discussion and Film Screening

Join the d.talks discussion on the notion of community as it relates to place, materiality and the public. What alters with production as we source what’s in close proximity? The event is a double feature: a panel discussion followed by a film screening.

Panel discussion: 6:00 - 7:30 pm

Artists Yvonne Mullock and Peter von Tiesenhausen will join architect Richard Kroeker in a panel discussion and question period. Kroeker, finding inspiration from early First Nations designs and employing an innovative use of materials, and von Tiesenhausen, whose attention to the land shepherded in a cultural centre for a small town in Northern Alberta—both draw from the immediate surroundings with built form. Mullock’s work with Islanders off the coast of Newfoundland results in new quilts for the Fogo Island Inn that are rooted in local techniques and material memory.

Screening: 8:45 - 10:00 pm

Following a break and opportunity for RAIC members to attend the keynote presentation we will screen the documentary film, Strange & Familiar, about the social entrepreneurial transformation of Fogo Island from reliance on cod fishing to an artistic and tourism destination. Architect Todd Saunders, responsible for the design of the Inn and artist residencies on the island, will take questions following the film.
