Dear colleagues,
As a proud Albertan, I am delighted to invite you to Calgary for the 2015 AAA/RAIC Festival of Architecture. The city’s striking architecture reflects its culture as a place that thinks big while remaining friendly and caring.
Our four-day gathering, from June 3-6, promises to be packed with smart insights, relevant continuing education sessions, and opportunities to socialize, network and celebrate.
The Festival’s theme of (Re)generation + Integration embraces the values of collaboration and inclusivity. It highlights our ability to create spaces that welcome all members of society, including the elderly and those with mental and physical disabilities. The theme also focuses on the relationship of architecture and landscape architecture, interior design and urbanism.
One of the most tangible benefits of the annual Festival and the RAIC itself, are the relationships we forge and the community we create. This sense of community makes us stronger, personally and professionally.
That’s why I think delegates will be inspired by our 2015 Honorary Fellows, Zita Cobb, and Vassilis Sgoutas, who will deliver keynote addresses.
Zita Cobb is a social entrepreneur dedicated to the economic and cultural resilience of contemporary rural communities, including her hometown of Fogo Island, NL. She will be the keynote speaker at the plenary session. In addition, Todd Saunders, the Norway-based architect of the recently-completed Fogo Island Inn, will be a panelist at the plenary session.
Vassilis Sgoutas, based in Athens, Greece, has been actively involved in major projects related to inclusive design and the environment. He is a past president of the International Union of Architects (UIA). In 2007, the UIA launched the Vassilis Sgoutas Prize, rewarding architects who have contributed to the betterment of living conditions in areas below the level of poverty. He will be the keynote speaker at the RAIC College of Fellows convocation.
A highlight of the Festival is always the president’s dinner and awards gala where we will present the winners of the RAIC Awards of Excellence and hear from the 2015 Gold Medalist.
The Festival will also offer special events for interns and students, and a first-rate companions’ program that explores Calgary and its cuisine.
Please join me in Calgary where you will find superb opportunities to expand your knowledge, grow your practice and engage your communities.

Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA), I would like to personally welcome each of you to the 2015 Festival of Architecture. This event will co-hosted by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the AAA in Calgary, Alberta from June 3-6, 2015.
Calgary is home to a vibrant and growing design community as well as the education hub of Alberta's future registered architects and licensed interior designers. Calgary offers a unique mixture of picturesque surroundings, a vibrant arts scene, and a diverse culture that will captivate audiences. From the scenic Bow River to the top of the Calgary Tower, this beautiful city will give delegates an opportunity to experience more than just prairies and cowboys.
The Hyatt Regency will be the primary venue, but the festival’s inspiring theme of (RE)GENERATION + INTEGRATION will enable many parts of Calgary to be showcased. Delegates will enjoy world-class professional development speakers, premier city tours and exhibits, and constructive networking opportunities. Our association and professions are confronting a time of many changes and we are meeting these during a time of larger nationwide and global transitions. The world of design is an exciting area in which to work/study/play/live. We will continue to meet and bring inspired people together in forums like this, to ensure our professions remain current and at the ‘cutting edge’ with (RE)GENERATION + INTEGRATION.
We look forward to seeing you in Calgary for an unforgettable experience!

Don Davidson, Architect, AAA, MRAIC
